We started fishing the Port Macquarie Golden Lure Tournament last Saturday with local Port angler Scott Baker & his mates. On the first day we caught 7 weighed a 402lb blue marlin on 24kg (nice fish) for Scott putting us in the lead for the capture division of the tournament.
On the Sunday the 2nday of the tournament Capt AJ put himself in the running also for the tag & release divison by tagging a striped marlin on 30lb. We caught & weighed another blue marlin for Scott that went 270lb. This brought us to the lead in both divisions of capture & tag & release woot woot! Also leading champion boat & male angler. Way to go Capt AJ & the Iona II Team.
Monday was a lay day. Tuesday was ladies day & we even took out ladies day for female angler Leanne Willson a fiesty blue marlin caught on 50lb that weighed in at 250lb. Congrats to Leanne as she put up a good fight. Well done!
Wednesday another lay day & today was cancelled due to the weather.
One day left of the tournament tomorrow with Iona II in the lead in capture & tag & release a feat not achieved in 28 years!! Bring on tomorrow! Good luck Capt AJ & the Iona II crew & Scott Baker. Stay tuned for our results of the day tomorrow……

Happy New Year to all our fish friends from Capt AJ, Rhino & Mustard. Well we started the Newcastle/Port Stephens Season on Monday with US client John & his wife a few friends. A cracker of a start to the season raising 21 fish in the last 3 days, 19 striped marlin & 2 blue, 3 double headers & a triple header! Tuesday we caught 9 marlin, 8 striped marlin & a blue marlin, Wednesday 1 from 1 striped marlin & Thursday 2 striped marlin from 5 one was a blue. The highlight of the day yesterday after super chef Rhino prepared a toasted sandwich for Capt AJ when he was just about to eat it he got ambushed by a pack of striped marlin. Hooking one of them he looked over the side & there was another striped marlin eating his toasted sandwich lol! With the other stripey hooked & jumping around the ocean Capt AJ reversed up to the sandwich eating stripey & fed it a pitch bait which he took! Hilarious!

The last charter of the Cairns Giant Black Marlin Season for Capt AJ, Rhino & Mustard on board Iona II & Capt AJ decided to head wide with US anglers John St George & Berk Ellis, to the Seamount. His inkling to do this was more than rewarded with 5 black marlin out wide. A 500lb black marlin on 50lb tackle for Berk Ellis & a 900lb black marlin for Berk! John St George took out champion angler though with a 600lb black marlin on 50lb, a 450lb black marlin & we welcome him to the 1000lb club with a very nice 1000lb black marlin which Rhino captured on sunset awesome stuff.
Capt AJ has proven himself this season with 17 black marlin from 24 in the last 13 days these included 2 1000lbrs, 900lb & an 850lb. With stats like these it has proven that he is one of the Cairns Fleets most successful Captains. An oustanding feat.
